Why Blog?

As a social worker, I often tell my clients to keep a journal to help them process their thoughts and feelings. Being on bed rest has given me the time to think and I definitely have a lot to process. I debated whether or not I wanted to publicly let people into my world, my hardship, insecurities, and raw emotions. I then decided that documenting this experience, whatever the outcome, will provide me with an avenue of growth. I can't think about growth now because it's too fresh/raw/ugly... but the beautiful thing trauma brings is the gift of growth. Life. Is. Messy. Sometimes it's the individual struggles/hardships that we each experience that link us together to remind us that life is humbling and we are never alone.
What's in a Name?
The name of the blog comes from the Dave Matthews Band song, "Best of What's Around". My husband and I are big DMB fans and this song resonated with me because of the outlook and how applicable it is to our lives right now.
"Best of What's Around"
Hey my friend
It seems your eyes are troubled
Care to share your time with me
Would you say you're feeling low and so
A good idea would be to get it off your mind
See you and me
Have a better time than most can dream
Have it better than the best
So we can pull on through
Whatever tears at us
Whatever holds us down
And if nothing can be done
We'll make the best of what's around
Turns out not where but who you're with
That really matters
And hurts not much when you're around
And if you hold on tight
To what you think is your thing
You may find you're missing all the rest
Well she ran up into the light surprised
Her arms are open
Her mind's eye is
Seeing things from a
Better side than most can dream
On a clearer road I feel
Oh you could say she's safe
Whatever tears at her
Whatever holds her down
And if nothing can be done
She'll make the best of what's around
Turns out not where but what you think
That really matters
We'll make the best of what's around
